Are You Content or Just Complacent?

February 8, 2016 By Melissa

Recently, I met up with an acquaintance. I enjoyed talking with her – she has a great sense of humor, she hosts parties, and her friends tell me she’s always there to help people out.

But she’s been working at the same position within her company for seven years. It’s an entry-level position with job responsibilities that include filing and data entry. Most of her colleagues are recent grads that stay for a year or so before moving onto bigger endeavors.

She doesn’t have any plans to change positions or move to a different company. When I asked her how things were going, she replied that everything was fine. Her job is stable and helps her pay the monthly rent.

Recently, though, she’s had a change in heart. She admitted that she realized how it easy it was for her to stay complacent. She resists change, but also feels that there’s nothing for her to look forward to. She confides that she worries time has been passing her by.

And you would be right. But there’s a right way to breathe and a few ways you might be breathing ineffectively. Chances are, you might not be breathing properly.

Over time, you breathe a certain way. It can either be by inhaling too much air, taking shallow breaths, or unknowingly holding your breath. The way you breathe eventually becomes something you do as a habit.

Is the way you breathe just getting you by, or are you breathing in a way that optimizes how you work and perform?

Use This Technique to Get Yourself Productive Right After Waking Up (with examples)

September 16, 2015 By Melissa

Here’s a question:

Do you hate cliffhangers…or love them?

I hate them.

It’s like that moment when you were little and someone (your mom, teacher, whoever) was reading you a story and just when it got to the good part, they slammed shut the book and said, “You’ll have to wait until tomorrow to hear the rest of the story.”

Ugh. Or you watch a TV episode, and just as the show comes to an end, a new plot development arises. Thanks a lot, screenwriters.

Well today, we’re going to use cliffhangers to our advantage when it comes to getting work done. I’m going to share a technique for getting yourself productive at the beginning of a day.

And you’re going to love it.

In The Book Thief, a young girl named Liesel begins a love affair with books during World War II in Germany. While locals are forced to throw their books into the fire, Liesel steals books from a wealthy home and shares the gift of words with others. During a difficult time, the stories provide a source of hope and inspiration.

Words can be powerful beyond belief. But their full potency is felt only if they are used correctly.

The question is:

How do you turn words that are “blah”, into exceptional ones?

By writing and learning how to write.

Want to Find Your Passion? Follow the Trail.

July 27, 2015 By Melissa

Do you remember the story of Hansel and Gretel?

In the beginning, there’s not enough food to go around because of a famine. People are starving, and they can only afford to feed the stronger family members. One night, the children overhear their parents talk about leaving them in the forest to fend for themselves.

Fortunately Hansel has a plan. He sneaks outside to collect a bunch of pebbles, placing them in his pocket before going to bed.

“What are you doing?” Gretel asks.

“You’ll see,” her brother responds.

Why Can’t We Finish Reading That Book?

March 24, 2015 By Melissa

Have you ever gotten a book that you wanted to read and partway through, you just gave up and stopped? Yet another book, dumped into your “graveyard of unfinished books.”

This happened to me in the middle of reading The Two Towers. Goblins, anyone?

It’s interesting how when we were children, the world was filled with endless possibilities. We grew up thinking – no, knowing – that someday we would be famous and rich, with the world at our feet. We weren’t sure of the steps that it would take, but somehow it would happen eventually.
